Finding Who? Finding Me
Finding Me is the first novel I have read by Kathryn Cushman., and I can say it will not be the last. The characters are well-defined and I found my self thinking about them during the day when I was not reading the book. The plot of the story, while a bit far fetched, like a story from Dateline or 48 Hours, addressed serious questions that everyone must face in their lives at some point. In the story, Kelli discovered that the one man she idolized her whole life, her father, was not the man she thought he was.
Disappointment by loved ones is a problem faced by all of us at sometime in our life. In Kelli’s life, this heart break is truly life changing. As we meet the characters of the story, Kelli’s father and step mother have just died in an automobile accident. While going through her fathers papers, as she packs up her father’s house, she makes a startling discovery that disturbs her well planned life and sets her on a journey of discovery.
In her quest to “do the right thing” and make amends for the sins of her father, Kelli is confronted by true forgiveness and unconditional love. Along this journey, Cushman exposes some of the stereotypes of the “bible belt”, in the naiveté of one of the character’s reaction to Kelli’s aversion to church. There is a definite sense that Kelli still has some questions about forgiveness and faith at the end of the book, a problem that left me unsettled and pleased at the same time. I must rest in the hope that we will one day meet Kelli, Alison, Beth, Kenmore and the others in a sequel.
I recommend this book as a good read, and I am pleased to have had the honor to review it for Bethany House. I look forward to more books by Kathryn Cushman. You can purchase this book at ChristianSupply.com or your local Christian Bookstore.
